Kenosha County Road KR
for the migrantes

There were rabbits in the cabbage patch once…
so remembered riding the stretching road.
What triggers such child thoughts?
Not bristling corn rows, shorn
not rolled hay bales,
not rusted trappings of farmers’ other days.

It is the cabbage patch exaggerated to acres
a gathering of heads, dark outer leaves’
marine haze to the late summer horizon…
and browned aching bodies
bent to the ground.
