Surveyor, 1849

Somewhere in the middle
of naming greatness
one nation tumbled
into the waters of history
or into the deep end
of an unfamiliar mythic pool
where lakeness too
finds something resembling
itself a semblance
brought about by
dissembled fragments
of assembled desire
in other words
someone son of hugh
or frankly
perhaps
a river himself
turned story
into some
thing simpler
chart or name:
mendota.
