A Puddle's Geometry

to Peter Nelson, my math professor

A puddle speaks
to you from the clouds up in the night,
senses you as your dog in the dark.
A puddle can be found
in the middle of September or August.
There are some things a puddle needs:
a broken glass,
a rusty nail,
the silent face of an owl.
My sons, Marcel and Adrien, understand
that to become a puddle
you must laugh and rain.
